Filee HWP and HWPX: convert Korean documents without Hancom
Open Korean HWP and HWPX workflows in Filee without Hancom Office. Choose PDF, DOCX or text output, check document structure and handle protected files safely.

Choose PDF for reading, DOCX for editing
Filee reads Korean HWP/HWPX documents without Hancom Office. Use PDF when the recipient needs to read or print, DOCX when they need to edit in a Word-compatible app, and TXT or Markdown when you mainly need text. These outputs have different preservation limits.
Filee also converts between HWP and HWPX. Do not treat that as an instruction to rename the extension: they are different file representations. Use the offered conversion route and keep the source.
Start with a document you can inspect
You need a readable, unprotected source, Filee's official desktop package, a writable destination and permission to convert the material. On macOS and Linux, the packages remain previews. The bundled rhwp component handles HWP/HWPX rendering and the HWP/HWPX interchange routes; some alternative document routes can use optional engines.
Check installation and engines if a target is missing. A Hancom license is not a prerequisite for these Filee routes. It is still useful to keep a reference rendering from the source's author when the document contains important forms, equations or a precise page layout.
Make a PDF for a recipient
- Copy the HWP or HWPX to a test folder and open Filee.
- Drop the file into Home, or use the platform's configured file-manager gesture.
- Select PDF, review the chosen preset and convert.
- Open the new PDF in the reader the recipient will use.
- Compare the page count, Korean glyphs, page breaks, tables, images, headers and footers with your reference.
For a form or official submission, inspect the particular fields and signature spaces rather than only the first page. A conversion-completed message does not certify that an organization accepts the resulting format.
Make a DOCX for editing
Choose DOCX when the recipient will revise text in Word or another compatible editor. The built-in DOCX writer can read the supported document model; HWP can reach it through the bundled HWP/HWPX route. Some HWP/HWPX conversions can use optional LibreOffice.
After conversion, edit a paragraph and a table in the resulting copy. Inspect line wrapping, merged cells, headings and pictures, then save and reopen it in the intended editor. Complex forms and layout may need manual repair in the editor.
If your goal is only to quote a few paragraphs, TXT or Markdown may avoid carrying an unnecessary page layout. Check the text's order and characters. If page fidelity matters more than editability, a checked PDF is often the more appropriate deliverable.
Convert HWP and HWPX, or create HWPX from Office
Use the HWP or HWPX target to convert between the two with the bundled rhwp engine. The built-in HWPX writer also accepts supported DOCX, spreadsheet, PPTX, PDF and text inputs; these routes do not require Hancom Office.
Choose the target that the recipient explicitly requests. Inspect the resulting document in their intended application where available. A spreadsheet embedded into a document representation is not the same as retaining the original spreadsheet's live formulas; see Office conversion limits before discarding its source.
A PDF-to-HWPX route starts with the content recoverable from the PDF. It cannot conjure the original editable HWP source from a scan. For a scan with no text layer, Filee's PDF reader can carry page imagery but performs no OCR. Read the PDF workflow guide for that distinction.
When a file is protected or fails
Encrypted or DRM-protected documents cannot be made convertible by changing their extension. Obtain an authorized unprotected export from the owner instead of following advice to remove protection indiscriminately.
If one file fails, try a simple public HWP/HWPX or a small synthetic document to determine whether the problem is file-specific. Record the Filee version, system, target, preset and engine status. Keep private Korean forms or workplace documents out of public issue attachments; a reproduction with invented names and harmless content is preferable.
For the next step, use the troubleshooting guide to distinguish a gesture failure from a conversion failure.
